More than 360 law faculties from all over the world participate in the competition, which has been held in Vienna, since 1994. It is recognized as the most comprehensive and prestigious competition in international commercial arbitration. The competition consists of two stages, written and oral, which involve disputes regarding the implementation of the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG).
In this long-term process that started with the publication of the dispute, in October, our students were entitled to participate in the oral stage by completing the writing of the petition in December and the letter of response to the lawsuit in January. At the end of these months of intense work, the oral stage was held between 9-14 April 2022. Our students Merve Çeçi, Abdülmecit Güldağı and Betül Merve Hot discussed the procedural aspects of the case. Ahmed Kürşad Özeren, Eslem Özbabacan, Nurseda Dayı and Tunahan Soylu made their claims and defenses on the merits of the case.
On April 9, 2022, the first day of the competition, Merve Çeçi and Ahmed Kürşad Özeren represented our university against the University of Geneva as the respondents. On the second day of the competition, Nurseda Dayı and Merve Çeçi, as claimants, met with IBMEC Sao Paulo University. On the third day of the competition, Tunahan Soylu and Abdülmecit Güldağı, as claimants, completed their matches against the National University of Singapore, and lastly, our team, represented by Eslem Özbabacan and Merve Çeçi, competed as the respondent in the match against which Charles/Prague University was the claimant.
We congratulate our students, who have the title of being the first team of our university to participate in the Willem C. Vis Moot competition and we hope they will be pioneers in this path and wish them continued success.
